  INTERNATIONAL DAY OF HAPPINESS Today is the International Day of Happiness, proclaimed by the United Nations. Yesterday the ninth World Happiness Report was published. In July 2011 the General UN Assembly passed a resolution that invited national governments to "give more importance to happiness and well-being in determining how to achieve and measure social and economic development." Ever since, professionals have been working on methods how to determine the happiness of people. The 2021 Happiness Report had to take into consideration the global pandemic and its repercussions. Exactly one year ago Europe went into the first lockdown and life has not been the same since. The report considered how the measures taken by governments to combat the Covid-19 virus have influenced happiness.   My Right to Vote   I voted today. I put my cross on an electoral list for the state election. No-one prevented me because I am a woman. I can vote because I live in a democracy where everyone has the same rights. But that was not always the case. For a long time, women were denied the right to political participation by the legislative bodies consisting of men. As they were not going to give women the right to vote voluntarily, women had to demand and fight for their rights. Giving women a say in things would mean that men could no longer dominate the process. Giving away power was certainly painful. In Switzerland, one of the last European counties to give women the vote in 1971, the change still came about due to women’s activism, but most likely also because it was just embarrassing for a modern, democratic country to exclude women from politics.   Mein Wahlrecht Ich habe heute gewählt. Ich habe mein Kreuz auf einer Wahlliste der Landtagswahl gesetzt. Keiner hat mich daran gehindert, weil ich eine Frau bin. Ich darf wählen, weil ich in einer Demokratie lebe, in der alle das gleiche Recht haben. Es war aber nicht immer so. Lange wurde Frauen das Recht auf politische Mitbestimmung verwehrt durch gesetzgebende Organe, die aus Männern bestanden. Da sie den Frauen nicht freiwillig das Wahlrecht geben wollten, mussten Frauen das Recht einfordern und darum kämpfen. Die Frauen mit zu beteiligen würde aber bedeuten, dass Männer den Prozess nicht länger dominieren konnten. Macht abzugeben ist sicher schmerzhaft. In der Schweiz, eines der letzten europäischen Länder, das den Frauen 1971 das Wahlrecht zugestand, kam die Veränderung sicher zustande, weil Frauen sich dafür aktiv einsetzten, aber wahrscheinlich auch, weil es einfach für ein modernes, demokratisches Land zu peinlich war, Frauen weiterhin aus dem politischen Prozess zu ver

  Internationaler Frauentag   Im Jahr 2020 nahm ich trotz der Gefahr des Corona-Virus den Internationalen Frauentag sehr ernst und besuchte einige interessante Veranstaltungen, nur eine Woche bevor Europa in den Lockdown ging. Am Vorabend des Internationalen Frauentags besuchte ich die Vorführung des Films "Fighters for Peace". Es ist ein Dokumentarfilm über die Arbeit des Friedensnobelpreisträgers Dr. Denis Mukwege und der Ärztin Dr. Gisela Schneider vom Deutschen Institut für Ärztliche Mission (Difäm) in Tübingen, das seine Arbeit in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo (DRC) unterstützt. In der anschließenden Podiumsdiskussion sprach die Journalistin Susanne Babila, die den Dokumentarfilm gedreht hat, mit Dr. Gisela Schneider und der ehemaligen Bundesjustizministerin Dr. Herta Däubler-Gmelin.
